Smarter Location Sharing with What3Words integration in AMX

When managing assets across large and complex networks, communicating an exact location quickly and accurately is essential. AMX Web integrates with the What3Words API to provide users with a simple, memorable and shareable way to reference precise locations directly from the map.

Making Asset Locations Easier to Share

Asset and location information in AMX is often shared with field teams, contractors, emergency services and other external stakeholders. While coordinates and grid references provide precise information, they can be cumbersome to communicate and are susceptible to errors when entered or passed between teams. With What3Words integrated into AMX, users can generate a short three-word reference for a location and share it quickly with others. This can help reduce ambiguity and make it easier for teams to identify and navigate to a specific asset or site.

How the AMX Integration Works

Setting up the integration is straightforward. Clients first register with What3Words and obtain a valid API key. This key and the relevant API endpoint can then be configured within the What3Words section of AMX Web Settings.

Once configured, users can access What3Words references directly from the AMX map.

When viewing records with location information, users can switch to Map View to see assets plotted on a map.

Selecting a location on the map opens a pop-up with the relevant details, including an option to show the What3Words reference.

The reference is displayed in two formats:

Both formats can be copied to the clipboard using the Copy button, making them easy to share with colleagues, contractors or other stakeholders.

Finding Locations Using Three Words

The integration also works in reverse, allowing users to search for a location using a What3Words reference. From AMX Web Map View, users can open the search panel and select What3Words from the 'Searching by’ options.

After entering a valid three-word reference, such as ghost.daytime.organist, AMX automatically identifies the corresponding location, zooms the map to the relevant coordinates, and highlights it with the What3Words icon. This provides a quick way to locate a site or asset when the user is given a three-word reference, rather than traditional coordinates or a grid reference.

Supporting Field Teams and Operational Response

The combination of AMX's asset management capabilities and What3Words' simple location referencing can be particularly useful for organisations managing assets across extensive or difficult-to-navigate areas. Whether directing an inspection team to a specific asset, helping a contractor locate a work site or providing emergency services with an exact location, three-word references offer a simple way to communicate precise geographical information. By bringing this functionality directly into AMX Web, users can generate, copy and search What3Words references without leaving the asset management environment.

A Simple Addition to Smarter Asset Management

The What3Words integration is another example of how AMX can connect with specialist technologies (including Street Works, UKPMS & Google Maps) to make asset information more accessible and actionable. By combining precise geographical data with an easy-to-share location reference, AMX helps organisations improve communication, support field operations and make it easier for people to find the assets they need. With AMX and What3Words, precise asset locations are just three words away. The feature is currently available in AMX Web, and we plan to bring it to AMX mobile in the near future!
