Strengthening Bus Infrastructure Asset Management with AMX

In 2025, Essex County Council recognised the need to replace its existing in-house asset management system. The council began exploring the market for a sustainable and adaptable solution. Following market engagement, supplier presentations and a review of available procurement frameworks, AMX emerged as a strong fit. Its flexibility and ability to be configured and developed to meet the council’s specific requirements gave Essex confidence that it could provide the functionality needed now and in the future. While the existing system had supported the council’s operations, the move to AMX provided an opportunity to establish a robust, long-term solution and to strengthen business continuity.

Benefits of Using AMX

Today, AMX provides a central asset management platform for Essex County Council’s bus-stop infrastructure, supporting the management of approximately 7,500 marked bus stops across the county. The system records bus stop locations and the infrastructure associated with each site, providing the council with a comprehensive asset inventory and supporting its wider asset management capabilities. Around 4,500 of the county’s bus stops currently have physical infrastructure recorded against them, with the infrastructure team managing the network geographically. For the council, having this information available in a single, central, accessible system has transformed how teams access and use their asset data.

Actionable Information

One of the key benefits for Essex has been AMX’s configurable reporting capabilities. Reporting had been a significant limitation of the previous in-house system, making the ability to extract, tailor and present information a particularly important requirement. AMX enables users to produce reports that support day-to-day operational needs and meet external reporting requirements. This is becoming increasingly valuable as requirements around Department for Transport and Enhanced Partnership reporting continue to develop. With around 30–40 users having access to the system, including council staff, contractor administrators and operatives, information can be shared across teams and organisations. Council teams primarily use the web platform, while contractors and field operatives make use of the mobile application when working on site.

Bespoke Feature Development

A particularly valuable addition for Essex has been the bespoke pricing builder developed by the AMX team. The tool allows staff to generate a complete cost for individual jobs and compile lists of work for allocation to contractors or operatives. By bringing this process into AMX, the team has reduced the time needed to prepare and distribute job information, while creating a more consistent and efficient workflow. The ability to access job and asset information through a single central web-based system also reduces the need to distribute it across multiple platforms. Rather than relying on separate tools such as SharePoint, the people who need it can access relevant information directly through AMX. Another major benefit is the ability to retain and access historical asset information. It also gives the council a clear reference point when considering planned changes or improvements. As part of the implementation, Essex brought in historical bus-stop data covering at least 7 years, along with multiple photographs for each location. This provides the team with a valuable record of how individual sites have changed over time.

The Future with AMX

From managing thousands of bus stops and historical records to supporting contractor workflows, bespoke pricing, mapping and increasingly important reporting requirements, AMX is helping bring Essex’s bus infrastructure information together in one place. A good example of this flexibility is the work being undertaken with Bauer Media Outdoors to replace and upgrade almost 1,500 bus shelters. AMX provides access to near-real-time information about installations, helping the council maintain visibility into progress and serving as a valuable source of information as the programme develops. As the council’s requirements continue to evolve, AMX continues to help run more efficient operations today while creating a platform for continued development in the years ahead.
