Asset Management Software

March 2018:Bridges 2018 – round up from Laura

A great time was had by all at the annual Bridges event in Coventry last week. The highest number of delegates from the Bridge Engineering industry  meant the atmosphere was buzzing throughout the day.

This was my first foray to the event in my role as Marketing Manager and just to add to the excitement I was asked to present our innovation to the conference after the morning break. The section took the format of a Pecha Kucha – 11 submissions of a short and simple 2½ minute presentation with only 8 supporting slides from key subjects all covering innovation within the Bridge Industry - you can read all the submissions at the conference website.

The piece regarding customisable software was well received by the audience and led to some great feedback on the stand as the day progressed. There were event a few people who didn't realise that AMX was an upgraded version of the well-known BMX. I certainly hope that both the format and the subject of innovation will be included again next year.

Another highlight of the day was sharing our space with colleagues from Sheffield Hallam University, who’s Bridge Inspection training is currently being adopted by our clients in Qatar using AMX Mobile. It was insightful to learn about challenges they’ve overcome there and to see that training was still in high demand by a number of delegates.

The show provided a great opportunity for me to meet a number of our clients and also see the wider scope of sectors that Bridges feature in as well as other service providers for potential collaborations – the half million pound Drone on the stand next door was certainly a draw for many!

A big thank you goes to everyone that came to say hello and also to the organisers (Bridge Design & Engineering, Transport Network, BOF and ADEPTLA) for a smooth-running and positive event – we look forward to seeing you again next year!

February 2018: New Team member welcome

Meet Lisa Colton who is joining us as a Software Tester. We're delighted to have her on board using over 12 years experience to continue improving the effectiveness of AMX.

January 2018: Attending Bridges 2018

We're starting the year with an exciting announcement about our return to Bridges 2018 taking place in the Ricoh Arena in Coventry on 14th March. We enjoy exhibiting at this event as not only does it provide an opportunity to network with our customers it also is a fantastic collection of best practice and industry updates to keep our finger on the pulse. We hope to see you there.

November 2017: User Group 2017 round-up

Last week saw the gathering of like minds in Herefordshire at the AMX Annual User Group. The most attended event so far included over 50 engineers and managers from 20 Local Government and Contracting infrastructure asset management teams covering Highways and Bridges, Flood Risk and Waterways.

The key theme of the day was evolution. The keynote presentation by Richard Perkins of Balfour Beatty Living Places covered the development of AMX within Herefordshire Councils Asset Management teams to grasp understanding and experience from establishing one database and rolling that out across multiple sectors in a carefully planned step by step manner.

Bringing together the various teams and councils from different regions, all facing similar challenges, also contributed to the evolution theme with new contacts being made within industry fields, ideas being shared and potential solutions discovered.

The afternoon breakout sessions for each sector also enabled the AMX team to share developments unique to specialist fields and identify potential improvements from users that would help enhance the system for the benefit of everyone.

Overall feedback was incredibly positive with comments such as “useful, beneficial, informative and enlightening” from the delegates and over 89% saying they would likely attend again next year.

Can you help us to host next year’s event… Numbers next year could be nearer 75 particularly with completion of upgrades for all our BMX customers due by Christmas. If you have space to host our group, including small breakout rooms for our afternoon sessions and some catering facilities please do get in touch with Jassima and we’d be happy to discuss options with you.

August 2017: AMX Forecasting for Financials

We were delighted that one of our superusers from Scottish Canals was asked to deliver a presentation at the World Canals Conference last year. Andy Fletcher shared how he used AMX to support his financial forecasting and planning requirements as part of his role as Head of Operational Planning while at Scottish Canals. Andy remains a key supporter of the flexible and customisable nature of AMX as a physical asset management system not just for managing data collected from Asset Management processes, but in using it to effectively deliver against Asset Management plans with substantiated knowledge.

Watch the 16 minute video here.

August 2017: NEW PROJECT: Middle East

We are excited to announce that following our successful co-operation with other projects in the Gulf, AMX Solutions will work in partnership with Aurecon to deliver a project for The State of Qatar, through The Public Works Authority (referred to as Ashghal).

The project involves implementation of a Bridge Management System (BMS) that can respond to the growing operational and management needs of the State’s road transportation network. At the same time restructuring its operational processes to align with best international asset management practices.

The scope of works for the BMS system covers a broad range of business requirements, technical requirements, inspection training, system training and seamless integration with other systems already in use by the Authority such as Maximo and GIS.

June 2017:Pay & Display Parking Meters
at City of Cardiff Council

The City Operations Team at City of Cardiff Council recently adapted their AMX system to include inventory, fault monitoring and maintenance for all their Pay & Display meters across the City.

Matt Harrison of the Civil Enforcement Team says: "We are using it to record the pay and display meters across the city and to log any faults which occur, our staff who go out to repair any faults use the Mobile app on their tablet to record the fault details.

"AMX has improved our record-keeping for the pay and display meters and being able to keep the details up-to-date easily. It has also improved our record-keeping for the faults which occur, as previous records were on paper, it was tedious to find any queries which may arise. Now it is simple to look-up a variety of fields to resolve any queries quickly. We require this because if someone based their appeal against a parking fine because of a fault with a machine, we now have clear and easy to access records. This has also resolved illegible handwriting.

"The best thing about AMX is that it can all be recorded in one place and can run reports easily and it has been customised to what we require. We are looking at expanding and recording enforcement signage."

April 2017: Digital Evolution of BMS in Gulf

At the recent Austroads Conference in Melbourne, our MD Saeid contributed towards a paper written in conjunction with Civil Engineering consultants Aurecon. The paper was titled "Digital Evolution of BMS (Bridge Management System) in the Gulf". The content of the paper discusses the various developments in technology and how it can be applied to Bridge Maintenance and Planning in a fast growing region such as the United Arab Emirates. The joint effort is a direct result of Aurecon implementing Asset Management Expert as its main BMS across Dubai and other gulf transport authorities. You can read the paper here:

January 2017: iOS app for Pothole recording

Our iOS application has recently been adopted by the Highways team at Cardiff Council for recording defects that have been brought to their attention by members of the public. Using the mobile device, inspectors can go out on site to follow-up public complaints of this kind which might include potholes, damaged street furniture or blocked gullys for example. The Inspector can easily raise a defect which will synchonise with the main database, allocate it to an asset if appropriate, take pictures and record relevant data including GIS map locations and then create a maintenance action or "service request" in AMX which links to the maintenance crews scheduling the repair to take place.

December 2016: A Year in Review

It's been a very productive year here at AMX, we've been busy all across the world demoing AMX, customising systems and supporting client integrations. We thought we'd capture a few of our asset management highlights and take this opportunity to thank you all for being a part of our successful year. We look forward to more exciting developments and new partnerships in 2017.

Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

November 2016: AMX User Group round-up

Last week AMX hosted over 30 Bridge, Flood, Highways and Systems engineers from across the country at Cardiff County Council’s fantastic offices in the Bay. Our annual event is an opportunity for all our users to get together and share ideas, best practice and quiz the development team on new developments and functionality that would benefit their ongoing programmes.

The highlights included:

  • a presentation from Cardiff’s Team Leader of Assets Andy Greener. He outlined how important it is to look at the bigger picture, start by laying the right foundations and build up, step-by-step. He made clear that implementing change in a big organisation is no easy task and there is a lot of hard work involved, but the benefits of adopting a ‘business as usual’ approach to asset maintenance and the policies and procedures that go with it reap massive rewards when able to present clear, accurate, money-saving information to key decision-makers and money managers.
  • a mini-training session on new reporting functionality, enabling customisation with colour coding and filtering to make summarising data more user-friendly.
  • a demonstration of the mobile handset functionality across multiple operating systems. Broadly, the form templates for inspections that are created in the main desktop version of AMX can be pushed out to a device along with a schedule of actions. This enables the inspector to capture data on site and reduce paperwork and data entry time by synchronising the data once complete.
  • a demonstration of the web-based version of AMX, a simplified easy to navigate system with a customisable dashboard for individual users and enabling use remotely.
  • round table break-out sessions for each sector, led by an experienced AMX user and with on hand help from the AMX team, many common issues were raised and explored with an opportunity for those who have already gone through the change process to offer support and tactical input to those getting more familiar with how AMX can facilitate improvements.

Overall, the day was positively received by all that attended and many left with a better understanding of the scope and potential of AMX in relation to their individual objectives, in some cases even agreeing to further separate discussions.

We are looking forward to continuing to grow this event with our customers over the coming years, and will keep the website up to date with any future similar events.

October 2016: NRW Phase 2 go-live

Our ongoing project with Natural Resources Wales reached another milestone this week with the release of the latest version and completion of phase 2 which included:

• the addition of maintenance management - planning, approval and mobile operation execution

• improved GIS location mapping for online and mobile offline maps integrated with ESRI map services

Phase 3 is now underway and includes the adoption of telemetry and hydrology and M&E department assets, increasing the total inventory database to over 37,000 assets.

October 2016: Flood Expo round-up

Last week saw our attendance at the ExCeL arena for the huge Flood Expo conference. This was our first time at the show which attracts over 2000 delegates from multiple sectors and industries associated with Flooding and Risk Management. For us, it was an opportunity to speak to many Flood Risk, Coastal and Drainage Managers of Local Councils who are seeking new software systems for managing their asset registers and statutory responsibilities. Being able to demonstrate the power of Asset Management Expert on the day and hand out approproiate information was a great advantage.

September 2016: WCC Conference

We had a fantastic trip to Inverness for this year's World Canals Conference. Along with featuring in the seminars with our customer Scottish Canals talking about Lifecycle Costs and how they have maximised its use; we were able to meet a number of organisations and individuals who are passionate about this unique form of infrastructure, maintaining its heritage and benefitting commercial users worldwide. It was a wonderful event that didn't focus solely on business with the inclusion of visits to the Falkirk Wheel and the Kelpies! Big thanks to Inland Waterways International and Scottish Canals for bringing it to our attention. We may see you in Syracuse!

August 2016: Mobile data collection for Street Furniture inventory

City of Cardiff highways team have begun using AMX for Android on tablets around the city to update their existing inventory of street furniture beginning with the area’s many Bus Stops.

Within the app the options available are:

• to create/update a unique asset record

• add photographs

• pinpoint the GPS location which corresponds with the street gazetteer

• if applicable record the condition of the furniture – which could then relate back into the systems maintenance planning schedule.

Having the application on the mobile handset has proven to be a huge benefit to the Cardiff team, increasing their productivity through the automatic link to the main database and reducing paperwork.

January 2016: Successful upgrade - Highways

This month Bridgend County Borough Council have chosen to benefit from the latest developments in Asset Management eXpert. As an existing user of BMX for managing Bridges, the system is being upgraded to include the Highways module which was developed in conjunction with the City of Cardiff Council project in 2014/15. By sharing the system across two departments, which inherently has cross-over data, the teams will be able to be more effective and co-ordinated in their approaches to maintenance of these assets and we’re looking forward to working with them.

January 2016: New Year, New customers

It looks like the efforts from the team toward the end of the year promoting our new flood risk module have worked. We’re delighted that Denbighshire County Council and Pembrokeshire County Council have both acquired AMX to manage their flood risk assets. This follows the successful first phase launch of AMX with Natural Resources Wales in October.

If your department is looking for a new system that reflects changing business needs, integrates with other systems and imports legacy data with the ability to plan and budget for the future, we’d be happy to offer a demo of how Asset Management eXpert can bring everything together.

December 2015: AMX exhibiting at Bridges 2016

We've now confirmed our place at Bridges 2016 at Ricoh Arena in March next year. We're looking forward to showcasing AMX, catching up with clients and meeting new industry contacts.

October 2015: Natural Resources Wales go live with AMX

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) is a Welsh Government Sponsored Body which came into being in April 2013, largely taking over the functions of the Countryside Council for Wales, Forestry Commission Wales, and the Environment Agency in Wales, as well as certain Welsh Government functions.

NRW employs almost 1,900 staff across Wales with a budget of £180 million. Its purpose is to ensure that the environment and natural resources of Wales are sustainably maintained, sustainably enhanced and sustainably used, now and in the future. The priority outcomes it is required to achieve is set out each year by the Welsh Government.

NRW manages seven per cent of Wales’ land area, which includes 311,000 acres of woodlands and many National Nature Reserves. It also operates water and flood defences, five visitor centres, and recreation facilities including over 680 miles of mountain bike, horse riding and walking trails, hatcheries as well as an accredited laboratory.

NRW has lead responsibility for flood risk management in Wales for main rivers and the sea and it owns and maintains over 15,000 flood assets which includes almost 319 miles of flood defences which reduce the risk of flooding to over 73,000 properties. Maintaining these assets is essential to protecting people and property from flooding.

Why change?

In July 2015, NRW replaced a legacy Asset Management system from the Environment Agency, with a new system, “Asset Management eXpert” (AMX).

The reasons for change included:

  • Removing a legacy system and service provided by the Environment Agency, resulting in reduced costs to NRW and provide value for money.
  • Providing a new solution which brings together in one place all the information and functionality to deliver Total Asset Management for our Flood Assets.
  • Obtaining a solution which is flexible to allow NRW to make system changes to reflect changing business needs.
  • Obtaining a solution which can include any other NRW Assets.

 Why AMX?

Following early demonstrations and a comprehensive tender process, it became clear to the NRW Project Team that the AMX solution would not only meet our immediate requirements, it would also be flexible to respond to our future business needs. Importantly, the feedback we received from their existing customers was that AMX Solutions Ltd were excellent to work with and this has certainly been our experience.

How has AMX supported NRW?

On the award of the contract, a significant scoping project was carried out to agree the specific requirements of the system to fit NRW’s existing business processes and help develop new ones. With a dedicated account manager and developer, the AMX Solutions team spent five months working closely with the NRW ICT team and the NRW Business Users Project Team, to customise AMX to meet NRW needs and implement the functionality required for the introduction of the first phase in July 2015.

First Phase implemented:

  • Import of Flood asset information for Wales from a legacy system.
  • Flood asset inspection.
  • Public Safety Risk Assessment.
  • Using AMX in the field environment including field data capture for Flood asset inspection.
  • Flood asset defect reporting.
  • Map view of flood assets.
  • Programming, Scheduling & Reporting of Asset Inspection.
  • Role specific & permission based interface.

Work is underway to implement other data and functionality, such as:

  • Flood asset maintenance information for Wales.
  • Using AMX in the field environment including field data capture for Flood asset maintenance work.
  • Integration with NRW Document Management System & NRW Geographical Information System.

Further data and functionality will be introduced following this work.

“Bringing together all of our Flood Asset information into AMX, will allow us to make better decisions on how we spend public money to maintain our flood assets to protect people and property from flooding. Our users have already told us that AMX is straightforward to use and easy to navigate. We are already receiving positive feedback on future enhancements that users would like to see. The beauty of AMX is that its flexibility will allow us to be able to implement enhancements, which will improve the information and functionality available to our users. Our experience of working with AMX Solutions, in particular Karen and Will, has been totally positive, we have provided them with some significant challenges which they responded to on every occasion. We look forward to continuing the excellent working relationship with them to develop a market leading Asset Management System”. Gareth Jones, Project Manager, Natural Resources Wales

September 2015: Walsh Infrastructure implements AMX for Pennsylvania Bridges contract

PennDOT identified a need to replace and maintain 558 bridges across the state and initiated the Pennsylvania Rapid Bridge Replacement Project (RBR). They awarded the contract for design, construction and upkeep to Plenary Walsh Keystone Partners. Walsh Infrastructure Management (WIM) are the maintenance provider within the consortium and are responsible for all bridge inspections, bridge washing activities, maintenance and rehabilitation as part of this 25 year contract. After extensive research and comparison, and following a successful tender, WIM appointed Asset Management Expert (AMX) as the software provider for their ongoing Bridge Maintenance programme across all 558 bridges.

We’re excited to announce that in August 2015 the system went live with the first bridge being managed within AMX, and will continue to be implemented for all bridges, the last one being due for handover in December 2017. Two key features of the system for this project are 1) the Web Application which allows all the people involved in the project, and the client PennDOT, to log-in, view and update data; and 2) mobile application allowing data collection on site in remote/rural areas where internet connection may not be available.

Randy Morgan of WIM says “As an Asset Management firm, Walsh Infrastructure Management is responsible for multiple asset management contracts with a wide variety of asset owners. Owner-specific requirements have always forced compromises with “one size fits all” applications. The flexibility of AMX to use one common system while managing a wide range of asset types and presenting different data views and reports specifically tailored to each individual contract is a significant benefit. By configuring data entry forms and reports to simplify the work for our field personnel while matching the specific requirements of the contract enhances the quality of our results and improves our efficiency. Monthly reports that used to take days to compile and validate can now be completed and “owner ready” within a couple of hours.”

AMX MD Saeid Naelini says “We are looking forward to developing our relationship with the WIM team and implementing AMX across more states in the US. Its great to work with a large, reputable engineering contractor who brings a wealth of experience in this sector and provides us with a good opportunity to learn from the diverse challenges faced across the US and give us scope to consistently improve AMX functionality to deliver results across the globe.”

July 2015: AMX and Consultant Engineers

AMX are often approached to tender for large scale projects that are managed by Consultant Engineering companies such as Aurecon and Mott MacDonald. Take a look at our datasheet which explains more about why engineering firms such as these choose AMX for their Bridge Maintenance Management System (BMMS).

June 2015: New Case Study - Powys and Ceredigion

The neighbouring Welsh counties of Powys and Ceredigion, which together cover a large percentage of the Welsh landmass, were looking to find a replacement highway structures management system due to the withdrawal of their existing solutions.

To help manage over 5000 assets that fall within their joint maintenance responsibilities, Powys and Ceredigion grasped the opportunity to look at sharing a system as part of a wider collaboration between the two authorities.

April 2015: Future Highways 2015

We've now confirmed our place at Future Highways, being held at the Kia Oval in London on 11th June. We're looking forward to showcasing AMX and meeting new industry contacts.

March 2015: AMX in Malyasia

After an initial online demo and successful technical meeting in Malaysia, we’re very excited to be working with Gamlite IT providing the integrated asset management system for The Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge or Penang Second Bridge. This is a 24km dual carriageway toll bridge in Penang, Malaysia that connects Bandar Cassia in Seberang Perai on mainland Peninsular Malaysia with Batu Maung on Penang Island.

AMX will be the central management system used for the preventative maintenance programme and as a decision support tool for the term of the project. Assets being managed include over 16.9km of marine viaducts and cable stayed bridge, 7km of land expressway, Mechanical & Electrical components such as street lighting and cables, landscape and building management.

This is the perfect project for AMX, demonstrating its expanding capabilities beyond individual structures to include the full scope of infrastructure projects and taking advantage of AMX mobile for increased efficiency.

Full details of the project will be available in a case study shortly. To request your copy when its available please email
